- History:
Oryx was born and raised on the island of Skjern. Her father was a semi-wealthy man with a woman, several daughters and 2 sons. He was a typical Torvaldslander man; virile, outgoing, jack-of-all-trades type of individual. He had made some decent money working with Southern merchants bring in goods to Skjern as well as export out sea sleen pelts; one of the primary exports of Torvaldsland.
Her father sent Oryx and her eldest cousin, Skjorn, to the Sardar fair late in the fall to meet up with his friend the merchant. While there, the Kurii, or beasts, managed to get across Thassa onto the island. She learned of the total destruction of her family. Her mother and sisters had been taken as Kur cows; a fate worse than death, and her father and brothers killed. All that remained were a few of the villagers, Oryx, and Skjorn.
The man whom her father had hired to look after his Will met up with the cousins in the fair, and Oryx was awarded her share of his assets. She then, resigned, made her way to return with Skjorn to Skjern and to whatever life they could have there. As luck would have it, the man she was to be companioned to was still alive, and this filled her heart with a bit of hope.
On the way to Skjern, just by the Laurius exchange point, the two cousins had a fight. Skjorn wanted more of Oryx's inheritance as payment for escorting her. Oryx refused, stating that it was his duty as her sole remaining family member to protect her. He had his men line out a bondmaid circle and told her to step within it, or he'd put her there. Reasoning with him that men of Torvaldsland do not enslave their own women, let alone their own cousins, Skjern left her at the Laurius exchange point; pennyless and unprotected.
Rather than risk getting swept up by a Slaver, the tales of which being told to her as a child, she headed into the forest to try her luck there. She knew of the panther girls, the women who turned their back on men and society, and hoped that a band would take pity on her.
As luck would have it, she did come across a band of panther girls who did decide to let her live and not trade her for candy. She learned to make a spear but, after that she felt she did not care for the lair itself. The women were lovely but she was home sick and angry.
She left the lair and struck out on her own; managing to work her way East back towards the Sardar mountains, where she set up her own little camp, of sorts, far from the Clearchus road. She learned to hunt tabuk on her own, how to skin it, and how to avoid the forest panthers amidst their hunts.
It was here that she met Santos. After a short, unsuccessful battle to get him to leave her alone, she found herself strung up by her neck on a tree being given the choice to live in slavery or die as a panther girl. Three attempts at hanging her later, she acquiesced and submitted.
A hand later, Santos freed her, pushing her back into the forest along with her own slave, whom she had caught before he had snagged her.
Unsure whether she wanted to try her luck within the woods again, she journeyed South; as far away from Torvaldsland as she could get and ended up within the confines of the Paravaci tribe.
She stayed for several days until deciding that she didn't like it; she wanted to go back North. The Ubar of the Paravaci, a jokester of sorts, burst into her wagon and threw a snowball, smacking in her face. After she raged at him, tempering his anger, he dragged her to his wagon where she was stripped and chained.
He raped her that night, claiming her body for himself, marking her as his Ubara. Although he kept her chained for the next several days, he promised her riches and jewels beyond her wildest dreams. Several days later, he unchained her; her ire having gotten the best of her, she lashed out again with her quick tongue.
She berated him and demeaned him, until he had had enough. Oryx was forced upon her knees and locked within his collar.
Miserable and angry, she was branded as a slave, and pierced through the nose as though she were a bosk. He whipped her several times, disciplining her for her disobedience, for her anger, for her mouth.
Within the month, a transformation had overtaken her, she fell in love with this rough man who manipulated her flesh. Who degraded her and made her crawl across the ground like a beast. She became his love slave.
He took other slaves, much to her heartache, but she still loved him. Adored him. Worshiped him.
Their 3 month anniversary came and went without much celebration; the second month had been rough, he had grown distant. She knew the end was near.
He called her one day to the edge of the camp. He had a chest, a skirt and blouse, a pair of boots, and pieces of paper in his hands. There, he freed her. Removing the collar that had so become part of her the past 3 months, and handed her the necessary papers of manumission that he had had drawn up in Turia; his enemy city. He told her that he was old, he was going to pay the Priest Kings a visit, tell them how foolish they were. He was going into the Sardar mountains; mountains that no one has ever come out alive from.
Heartbroken, she begged him not to go. She pleaded with him, as only a love struck slave girl can. He hugged her once and then ignored her. Walking off across the plains.
Shattered.
Broken.
Destroyed.
She returned with her guard, Bresin, to the bazaar in Victoria. Once there, she sent word to her cousin that she was still alive and waiting for her inheritence. She also sent word to an old friend of her father's; Thorgerd. She knew he owned a large, lucrative bosk farm between Kassau and Helmutsport and she offered him a hefty sum of gold; gold that Curunir, the Paravaci Ubar, had given her, to buy the farm from him. He graciously accepted the money and moved back to Skjern to be with his son and his family.
Now, Oryx owns Thorgerdheim (literally Thorgerd's Farm). There are plans to expand the farm into a village; a stop over between the South and North.
She remains heartbroken over the loss of the man she loved. Devastated that she will never see him again, never feel his hand on her, never again inhale his scent, but life must move on. She hides her shattered emotions close to her heart, and only Astraios, her thrall, knows even a smidge of her despair.
Thorgerdheim is now her brain child, and she throws all she can into its expansion.
Her emotions are cloistered away, safely hidden and protected behind walls she has built up. She will never again feel towards anyone the way she felt towards Curunir.
She is a broken woman; teetering between sanity and insanity, trying to find some sort of balance.
A month after Curunir removed his collar from her throat, Oryx found out that he was still alive and rebuilding the camp he had abandoned. Shattered anew at this revelation, that he was not coming for her, that he did not care for her as he said he had, Oryx lashed out at one of his camp members within the bazaar and told the woman that even if Curunir were to live for another 400 years, he would forever be dead to her. She told her that Curunir has forever lost his Northern gift.
Destroyed for a second time, she retreated within herself. She became bitter and angry to the point that she drove away most people that had congregated around her.
Thinking that she could regain some of the feelings she had had when she was with Curunir, Oryx self-contracted herself to Ansvarr for a period of 14 days.
It lasted 3.
She learned that it wasn't the slavery she enjoyed, it was the man.
Frustrated and more alone then she had ever been before, Ansvarr returned her freedom, and her possessions, to her.
Several days after this, while in the bazaar doing some shopping, she ran into Curunir. It was, perhaps, an odd situation. The one man she loved with every fiber of her being standing right there, and she had no feelings toward him whatsoever. In fact, she resolved right then and there to forget the 3 months with him had ever happened.
That is what she does. She is going about her life now, trying to forget everything about Curunir and her time in the Paravaci camp.
It will be her coping mechanism.
